Stay on Track: How to Monitor Your Senior Pet’s Weight at Home

A joyful-looking grey and brown tabby cat with its eyes closed is balanced on top of a vintage-style white analogue kitchen scale, with a speech bubble next to it that says "WEIGH TO GO MAN!"

While regular vet visits are the best way to keep a close eye on your pet’s health, these may become less frequent as they age. However, consistent weight monitoring is essential for senior pets, as even small fluctuations can be an early indicator of a developing health issue. This is why it’s a great idea to start monitoring your pet’s weight at home.

Fortunately, there are simple and accurate ways to do this:

  • For Medium to Large Dogs: You can easily use your regular human scales. Simply weigh yourself while holding your dog, and then subtract your own weight. This provides a surprisingly accurate figure for tracking changes over time.

  • For Cats or Smaller Pets: The precision of baby scales is ideal. These scales can detect subtle changes that a standard bathroom scale might miss, making them perfect for monitoring the weight of your cat or other small companions.

Regularly monitoring your senior pet’s weight helps you to catch both unexpected weight loss and unexplained weight gain early on. This proactive approach supports your pet’s overall health as they grow older, empowering you with vital information to share with your veterinarian and ensuring any necessary care can be provided promptly.
