When is a Dog Considered Senior?

SENIOR DOG AGE & CLASSIFICATION CHART: A visual guide showing a dog's senior life stages (Early Senior, Classic Senior, Super Senior) based on weight (up to 9kg, 10-23kg, 24-41kg, over 41kg). It details the corresponding age ranges and the recommended focus for care at each stage: prevention, disease management, and quality of life.

Ever wondered, “When is my dog considered senior?” The age at which a dog reaches its senior years largely depends on its size and breed. Smaller dog breeds typically have longer lifespans, meaning they enter their senior stage later than their larger counterparts.

As a general guideline:

  • Small dog breeds (like Chihuahuas or Miniature Poodles, up to 9kg) are often considered senior dogs from around 10–12 years old.

  • Medium dog breeds (such as Beagles or Border Collies, 10-23kg) typically become senior from about 8–10 years old.

  • Large dog breeds (like Labrador Retrievers or German Shepherds, 24-41kg) may be classified as senior from about 7–8 years old.

  • Giant dog breeds (like Great Danes or Mastiffs, over 41kg) may be classified as senior as early as 6–7 years old.

Beyond chronological age, look for signs of ageing in dogs, such as greying fur, slower movement, reduced energy, or changes in behaviour like increased sleep or confusion. These indicators can suggest your dog is entering its senior stage, regardless of its exact birthdate.
