A Visual History: Tracking Your Pet’s Condition with Regular Photos and Videos

Submitted by Dr. Anna Markay
Two smartphones are shown side-by-side, each displaying a photo of a golden retriever dog running on grass. The dog on the left is a younger dog, and the dog on the right is an older dog with a grey muzzle. A blue speech bubble with an arrow points to the two images, reading "TRACK CHANGES OVER TIME", visually demonstrating how photos can be used to monitor a pet's ageing process.

As a pet parent, you see your beloved companion every day, and because of this, gradual changes in their health and well-being can be incredibly difficult to spot. This makes it challenging to accurately assess their quality of life over time. According to our head Palliative Care vet, Dr. Anna, creating a visual record can be one of the most effective tools you have.

Taking regular photos and videos from consistent angles over time creates a clear and objective record of your pet’s behaviour, mobility, and overall condition. This visual history is invaluable, as it allows both you and your veterinarian to look back and identify subtle changes in your pet’s movement, mood, and behaviour that might otherwise go unnoticed.

This simple practice empowers you to have more informed conversations with your vet. By being able to objectively review your senior pet’s journey, you can help to identify any concerns early on and make informed decisions that best support their health and happiness.

It’s a beautiful way to document your pet’s journey while also giving you a powerful tool to ensure they receive the best care possible throughout their retirement.
